Go Barry!
Every night it’s the same. Barry Bonds walks to the plate. My mother-in-law hurries into the room and stands waiting, Sarah looks up from her laptop and claps, “Come on Barry!”
I am trapped in Giants fan hell.
See, I don’t like Mr. Bonds. If you follow baseball, you know what I’m talking about. If not, the situation is such that Barry Bonds will soon break the all-time home run record, arguably the most hallowed in American sport. And he’ll have done it with reported help from steroids.
“But you don’t know that,” Sarah says.
“Sure, I never actually saw him jab a needle in his butt, but there’s a lot of evidence that says he did.”
“Well, still you don’t know. I wish you’d just drop it.”
But she’s wrong. I do know, along with everyone else outside the Bay Area. What I don’t know is how the two of them can keep on fooling themselves. But again, maybe they know he’s a juicer, but they just don’t care. Baseball is turning into professional wrestling that way, with designated good guys and bad guys. The problem is that no one seems to care that this game shouldn’t be like professional wrestling. This is real. Barry Bonds really is going to stain the game. And yet, I keep watching and buying tickets, so I guess I’m to blame too.
I know this may seem trivial to non-baseball fans, but for reasons I can’t really explain, this whole thing means a lot to me. I fell like something good is being lost.
“You’re obsessed with Barry Bonds. That’s all you ever talk about.”
I just want someone to see my point. Another Cubs fan around the house would be nice.
“You love Barry. Admit it.”
I try to explain that what’s happening now is going to be remembered for years and years. Someday, there may be grandkids who want to know what it was like watching Bonds chase the record even though everyone knew he was juiced. Although, I’m almost positive this won’t happen. Something tells me kids two generations away won’t be as baseball-obsessed as I am. And maybe that’s a good thing, since it’s one less thing to fight about.

I hate bonds as much as you. His tainted records is killing baseball.
I am a charter member of the Bury Barry Bonds Club. (I also get into arguments regarding Pete Rose but that is a different post.) So I know how you feel. I was at college when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record and it just seemed so "right."
When Sarah says "You don't know." quote Mr. Spock "If I release a hammer while standing on a planet with a positive gravity, I do not have to see it fall to know that it did."
It's a good Nerd's answer that will either crack her up or confuse the hell out of her.
(Memo to Self: Look up what episode that was in for futre reference.)
I lost interest since Bonds started juicing....errr, began eatin healthy, working out, having his skull grow two more hat sizes and his feet three sizes. I will take my middlin, yet HONEST, Devil Rays any day. Youknow the 'Rays aren't juiced, can afford it.
Sorry, meant to say "can't afford it".
You know the Man ain't gonna let Bonds break the record. Just before it's about to happen the feds will take the field and arrest him right there at bat for tax evasion.
A-Rod will overtake Bonds some day, don't worry.
I don't even know hardly a thing about baseball but I agree with you, Brendan. Barry Bonds sucks. People shouldn't be rewarded for cheating, but it happens.
While reading this...knowing you are from the Chicago area I was wondering which side you fall on. Good to know you are a Cubs fan. Go Cubs!
I completely agree! He should not even qualify for the record. Did Hank Aaron juice? NO. Did Babe Ruth juice? NOOO! Did any of the legendary players in the Hall of Fame juice? No. Is he in the same league? NOO. (Baseball player- yes. Legend- no.) Period.
I am a big Reds fan. I remember the days of the Big Red Machine and still watch almost every game. I loved Pete Rose. I respect/ed the player he was and what he brought to baseball. He was one helluva player. I think his playing deserves to be honored in the Hall of Fame. As a person, his actions win him a spot in the Hall of Shame. Is the Hall of Fame for honoring the players and their actions on the field or thier actions in life? Pete Rose deserves to be in the HOF for the player he was. I just wish he'd keep his mouth shut.
I need my update! How's the job search going?
I too dislike Bonds and I love the CUBS!!
I LOVE the Giants. I am a lifelong fan, and if it made sense to say "I bleed Giants Orange," I would say it.
I LOVE the Giants. And I can't stand Barry Bonds. I thought it was neat, way back when, to have a big name on MY team.
But that was it. I've never liked his attitude. I admire the man's swing.
But I love baseball more than I love the Giants.
And Barry is not baseball.

I wanted to check back in on, and I see you're up to your old tricks. Dude, can you grow a pair and control your woman. I hope she is good in bed, because anyone who likes Barry Bonds has a significant character flaw. Its like rooting for the Lions against the Christians.

Anyway ... Come back soon !!
it doesn't matter if he took steroids or not...steroids don't tell him what pitch to swing at and which not to and to have patience at the plate, cuz he gets walked every time he's up there to bat.
couldn't get excited over Bonds.Another guy once had a Hall of Fame career going as a pitcher and then had another one as a hitter.Still unmatched
